The plan was to cycle around and across England, Wales and Scotland. Ireland was not really on the agenda as I had done this a few decades earlier. I was not greatly interested in following a coastal route or the simplistic Lands End to John O'Groats and back. My idea was to cover as much territory as possible and to try and cycle through all of the provinces and counties. I come from the Europe but apart from a few fleeting visits, I had never seen UK properly.
Arriving in Porto in northern Portugal, we haggled a deal for two old bikes at the Saturday flea market. At 20 Euros a pop, these bikes would take them the length of the country and back again - finding peace and words on the Portugese plains.
